Expectation...One Week to the Day!

   In one week my son Matt's and his bride to be Alex's wedding will have come and gone. I will be on the other side of an event that has consumed them and me and many others for the past several months.  There is so much planning and inviting, and shopping and thanking, and giving and taking and moving and arranging....and worrying! A wedding is bigger than Christmas!...and like Christmas, the wonder and joy of a wedding is in the expectation. Expectation is the defining emotion of a wedding. We expect a perfect beginning to the lives of the young couple starting their journey together. We expect to send them off on that perfect beginning with a perfectly planned  ceremony that minimally consists of...the white dress, the bridesmaids, the groomsmen,  the beautiful setting, the spiritual blessing of the union, the music that evokes tears and joy, the flowers, the food and finally the celebration!
    The expectation of what will my wedding be  begins somewhere between puberty and the engagement (for girls anyway!) and grows steadily as the appointed day approaches. We all remember what it was like as a child to wait for the arrival of Christmas Day.  A wedding is the adult equivalent of Christmas. We picture the day in our minds, and then we put our hearts and souls into making that expectation a reality. It is really quite a stressful endeavor but we must deny the stress so as not to let it mar the creation of that  magical day. Magical it must be because it will become a memory that the young couple will cherish forever. We plan every detail to set  their wedding day apart from all others...to personalize it and give it a signature that says this is your day! Expectation is the emotion of the day ...we expect them to cherish the day, and each other and their loved ones and their families and the whole idea of joining their lives together. A wedding is the send off party for the rest of their lives! It should be a great celebration!...a celebration that is the culmination of all the expectation that preceded it. There will not be another day like it...ever!       Hopefully!
